UMW Softball Sweeps Eastern Mennonite in Tuesday Twinbill

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept its Tuesday doubleheader with visiting Eastern Mennonite University, winning by 2-0 and 10-1 scores. The Eagles improve to 5-1 on the season.

The first game was a calssic pitcher's duel, with UMW's Caitlyn Burch and EMU's Emily Campbell trading scoreless frames for the first five innings. After the Eagles retired the Royals in the sixth, the home squad rallied for the two only runs of the game. Kimmy Thibodeau led off with a single, and pinch runner Riahna Jordan stole second. Amina Shakir followed with a triple to center field to score Jordan, and Bridget Laychak added a sacrifice fly to plate Shakir with an insurance tally.

The three hits in the inning accounted for two of the Eagles' four hits, with Grace Drury and Emma Schieda each adding a single.

Burch went the distance in gaining the shutout, allowing no runs on three hits with one strikeout.

In the second game, the Eagles jumped ahead early with three runs in the first. Shakir, Maggie Mrowka, and Laychak started the first with consecutive singles, plating the first run. Mrowka scored on a Rachel Porchie groundout, and Laychak scored on a Drury ground out.

The Eagles added three in the third, as Mrowka and Laychak opened the frame with singles before Rachel Porchie doubled home Mrowka. Drury followed with an RBI single, before Porchie scored on a Caroline Bird sacrifice fly.

The Eagles scored four runs in the fourth to put the game away. Jordan led off with a double and advanced to third on an infield single from Shakir. Laychak provided a two-run single, before scoring herself on a Porchie double.Logan Gibson would drive in Porchie with a two-out single.

Laychak had three hits, three runs scored, and three RBI, while Porchie doubled twice with two runs scored and three RBI. Shakir, Mrowka and Drury each added two hits. 

Stephanie Folkner gained her second win in three decisions, allowing no runs in four innings on two hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Thursday when they visit Mary Baldwin College for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
