The University of Mary Washington softball team advanced to the Coast-to-Coast Conference championship game on Friday afternoon as it downed Salisbury in the semifinals in dramatic fashion before falling to Christopher Newport in the championship game.
Semifinal game - Eagles win, 5-4.
The Eagles fell behind by a run early in the first, but an
Emily Mousso two-RBI single in the fourth that plated
Shelby Presgrave and
Lindsey Poole gave UMW the lead, 2-1.
The Sea Gulls struck for a pair in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer that gave them the lead, 3-2, then added another in the fifth on an RBI double. But an
Erica Shoop two-run home run in the sixth tied the game before she drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to put the Eagles on top, 5-4.
In the final frame, Salisbury's lead off hitter reached on a double, then was moved to third with a sac bunt. But
Stephanie Csontos was able to smooth the inning over with a strikeout, then a weak ground ball to third ended the game and gave the Eagles their first victory over the Sea Gulls in 10 years.
Championship game - Eagles fall, 8-1
In the championship game against CNU, UMW went up by a run early when
Linsey Spillman grounded out to first that scored Poole, but the Captains would go on to score the next eight runs to come away with the victory.
The Eagles season concludes with an appearance in the Coast-to-Coast Conference championship and they'll look to build on that momentum moving into next spring.
