UMW Softball Falls to Catholic on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington softball team fell to Catholic in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C.

Game 1 - Eagles fall, 2-1.

In Game 1, the Eagles fell behind by a run in the fourth but tied the game in the fifth on Sofia Ponce's RBI single that scored Allyson Jones. With the game tied in a pitcher duel, the Eagles fell in the eighth on a walk-off hit from the Cardinals.

Sydney Jester went 5.1 innings as she yielded just one run on six hits, while striking out a batter. Meanwhile, Stephanie Csontos allowed just one unearned run in the loss, tossing two innings in the circle.

Erica Shoop and Ponce had the lone hits for UMW.

Game 2 - Eagles fall, 4-3.

The second game produced another pitcher's duel as the Eagles led 3-2 in the final inning before the Cardinals walked it off for the second game in a row.

Catholic got off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning before Emily Angel's sac fly scored Maeve Haun from third to tie the game in the third inning. The Cardinals took the lead in the third with a solo homer before Angel's two-run bomb that scored Haun gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead in the fifth. But Catholic would walk off UMW for a second time as it scored a pair of runs in the seventh to come away with the victory.

Cierra Foss tossed two innings to start the game in the circle, yielding two runs, though one was unearned. And Csontos tossed the final 4.2 innings as she struck out four.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday against Bridgewater in Fredericksburg, Va. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
