UMW Softball Drops Doubleheader at Shenandoah on Thursday

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a doubleheader at Shenandoah University on Thursday afternoon. UMW lost the first game 9-6 and then fell in the second game 3-1.The Eagles slip to 8-8-1.

UMW got on the board first as they pushed a run across in the first inning. Rachel Remer reached on an error, Hannah Bruns got on with a single, then Maggie Mrowka loaded the bases with a single. Megan Hibbs recorded an RBI as she reached on a fielder's choice. The Hornets answered back with five runs in the bottom of the first as they went up 5-1.

The Eagles added two runs back in the third to go down 5-3. Bruns began the inning with a walk and Hibbs moved her to second on a ground ball. Caroline Bird scored Bruns as she reached on an error. Bird moved up to second on the throwing error, and Logan Gibson singled to left center to score Bird. Shenandoah added three runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 8-3.

UMW kept fighting in the first game as they added two more runs in the fifth to go down just three, 8-5. Hibbs, Bird, and Gibson all got on base the load the bases. Morgan Gilbert recorded two RBI's as she singled through the right side. After Shenandoah added another run in the fifth, the Eagles added another run in the sixth. Bruns got on base with a single and stole both second and third base to get in scoring position. Hibbs recorded her second RBI of the day to score her on a groundout. The Eagles were unable to get another run across. Hibbs pitched 6.0 IP and struck out three batters. 

In the second game, the Eagles struck first again in the first inning. Bruns led off the game with a double and then Remer moved her to second base. Gilbert hit a sacrifice fly to score Bruns and give UMW a 1-0 lead. Shenandoah pushed across a run in the second, third, and sixth inning to score all of their runs. UMW threatened in the final inning as they had runners on first and second but couldn't come up with a big hit to tie the game. Hadlea Valera threw 6.0 innings and striking out one batter.
