UMW Softball Splits Doubleheader at Bridgewater

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader at Bridgewater on Thursday in Rockingham County, Va. UMW won the first game 8-5, but fell in the second game 8-2.

In the first inning of the first game, UMW jumped ahead 1-0, as Hannah Bruns drew a walk and Malia Rogers doubled to right field to bring home Bruns. The Eagles added five runs in the third inning to extend their lead to 6-0. 

Rogers homered to score the first run of the inning. Kara Deppe kept the inning going as she walked and then Courtney Shea singled to put runners on first and second. Kassie Bender came up and singled to load the bases with one out.

Amy Sykes singled to bring home a run, and then Caroline Callahan walked to bring in another. Bruns then came up with the bases still loaded and reached on an error that brought the fifth run home. Caroline Newman drew a walk that brought the sixth and final run of the inning home.

UMW didn't stop there as they added another run. Deppe led off the inning as she reached on an error. Bender singled, and Sykes reached on an error that brought home Deppe. 

Bridgewater brought home two runs in the fourth inning, and then one run in the fifth inning to bring them within four, 7-3. In the seventh inning, UMW tacked on another run as Bruns singled to lead off and then Newman doubled to left field to bring her home. Bridgewater tried to mount a comeback in the bottom half, but only scored two runs and UMW won 8-5.

Deppe threw 4.1 innings to get the win, giving up three runs and striking out three. Megan Hibbs came in to strike out four batter in 2.2 innings pitched. Rogers and Newman led the way with two RBI's a piece. 

In the second game, Bridgewater jumped out on top 3-0 in the first inning. UMW answered with two runs in the third inning to get back in the game. Morgan Mumford started the rally as she singled to center field. Newman stayed hot in the game as she tripled and brought home Mumford. Rachel Porchie then brought home Newman on a single and UMW was only down 3-2.

Bridgewater added three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to take the lead 8-2. UMW couldn't muster up any runs and they fell 8-2 in six innings.

Newman had three hits, and Mumford added two hits for the Eagles in the second game. 

UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Shenandoah for a double header that starts at 12 p.m.
