UMW Softball Splits Sunday Twinbill with York

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Sunday Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader with York College of Pa. on Sunday at the Battleground, winning the opener, 7-5, and falling in the nightcap, 4-3.

In game one, The Eagles went ahead with two runs in the first. Caroline Callahan led off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Hannah Hautz tripled to score Callahan, and she scored on a double from Jessica Huber.

York answered with four runs in the second on four hits and an error to take a 4-2 lead, and added another in the third on a home run to extend their cushion to three runs. The Eagles would knot the score with three in the third, as Danielle Newman singled and stole second base, and Hautz followed with an infield single. An errant throw moved both runners into scoring position.

Malia Rogers followed with a two-run double, and scored on a Mikie Williams single. The Eagles found two runs in the fourth to go ahead for good. Hautz and Rogers singleed and advanced on a passed ball, and Huber drove home both with a single.

Kara Deppe worked out of two bases loaded jams in the late innings to gain the win in relief. She allowed one hit, with three walks and six strikeouts. Hautz led UMW with three hits, with Rogers and Huber adding two apiece, wiht five combined RBI.

In game two, all the runs were scored early, just as in the opener. York scored two in the first, one in the second, and one in the third. The Eagles scored once in the first as Newman tripled and scored on a groundout by Hautz. UMW added one in the third as Hannah Bruns singled, was advanced to second, and scored on a Newman single.

The Eagles added a run in the fourth as Britnee Haynes singled and scored on a double from Callahan.

Newman and Haynes had two hits for UMW. Erin Stinson took the loss, allowing two earned runs in 1.1 innings.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when theey visit Christopher Newport at 3 p.m.
