UMW Baseball Sweeps CAC Doubleheader from Wesley on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team won the opener in walkoff fashion, and erupted for five home runs in the nightcap in claiming a doubleheader sweep from Wesley College on Saturday at Dickinson Stadium. Game scores were 7-6 and 15-6; the Eagles improve to 13-12 and 6-6 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

In the opener, the Eagles allowed a run in the first, but responded in the third. Brian Burns was hit by a pitch and stole second, before scoring on a Robert Cross double. Stephen Johnston followed with an RBI single.

UMW scored two more in the fourth, as Kyle Bynum singled and stole second. After an error put runners on the corners, Garrett Lyons plated Bynum with a groundout. Bryce Runey singled, and the Eagles scored on a double steal, with Cody Beacorn crossing the plate.

The Eagles added two in the seventh, as Cross walked and Christian Hague reached on a fielder's choice. Johnston doubled home both runners. The Wolverines with five runs in the eighth to knot the score at 6-6 on five hits and three errors.

In the ninth, Reed Farrier singled with two outs, and Bynum walked. Beacorn provided the game winner with a single to center field.

Johnston had two hits and three RBI to lead the Eagles in game one, and also gained the win by pitching a hitless 1.1 innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

In game two, the Eagles built a 4-1 lead with one run in the second and three in the third. Bynum homered in the second, and Johnston hit a three run homer in the third.

Wesley again had a big inning in game two, scoring five in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. Johnston drove in Hague with a single to cut the deficit to 6-5 in the fifth, setting the stage for later offensive fireworks.

In the seventh, Beacorn was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the score, and David Slupek hit a first pitch pinch hit grand slam to put UMW up, 11-6.Johnston hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth, and Bynum and Ramsis Ruiz each hit two-run home runs to cap the scoring.

Johnston was 3-3 with five RBI, and Bynum hit two home runs in a 3-4 performance at the plate. Hague had three hits, and Slupek the grand slam.

Jonathan Truba gained the win for UMW, allowing two hits in 3.1 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Eagles will host Newport News Apprentice on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in a nonconference matchup.
