The University of Mary Washington (RV) took its third top-10 victory of the season by defeating No. 10 Bridgewater in Fredericksburg, Va. With the win, UMW now has four victories over ranked opponents as well.
In a well-pitched game by both sides, it was UMW's
Matthew Boyd who prevailed in the end as the righty took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning for the second time this season before a one-out single spoiled the no-hitter. Boyd pitched into the ninth inning before surrendering two base hits and departing with a three-run lead. He walked just one hitter, striking out four in the process.
The Eagles had to scrape those three runs together as they broke through on the scoreboard in the third when
Oliver Martin reached on a fielder's choice that allowed
Benjamin Rossi to score from third to take a 1-0 lead. They wouldn't score again until the eighth inning when
Cole Powers scored on a wild pitch, then a throwing error allowed
Xavier Doon to score the second run of the inning with a pair of outs.
Boyd departed to a standing ovation as he out-dueled his counterpart, who went seven-and-a-third for Bridgewater. As he first two hitters reached in the ninth,
Connor Hassan was called on to finish the came as the hard-throwing lefty set the next three hitters down via two foul outs and fly out to secure his third save of the season.
The Eagles are back in action for a three-game set with Juniata on Friday and Saturday (doubleheader). First pitch in Huntingdon, PA on Friday is set for 4 p.m.
