The University of Mary Washington baseball team held on to beat Juniata in Huntingdon, Pa., 7-6, on Friday night as it used a ninth-inning run to take the lead.
The Eagles took an early lead in the first inning on a
Collin Clarkson sac fly that scored
Oliver Martin from third, 1-0. In the third, the Eagles added two more runs after
George Rizzo reached on an error that was able to score
Keegan Mahoney, then Rizzo scored on a passed ball to push the lead to three.
In the fourth, UMW extended its lead once more as
Eric Powell doubled home
Connor Hassan before
Ryan Henson did the same to add to the lead, 5-0. Juniata scored a run in the fifth to cut into the lead, 5-1. In the sixth, UMW added another run on the board when Mahoney doubled
William Tuttle home, 6-1.
Juniata was able to tie the game in the eighth at six each, but the Eagles were able to come out on top as
Oliver Martin and
Cole Powers competed a successful double steal of second and home to come away with the win as
Nick Jordan pitched a shutout ninth.
Noah Ezzie was solid on the bump for the Eagles, tossing five innings of one-run ball on two hits and walk, while striking out four.
Matthew Caldwell tossed two innings of one-run (none earned) ball before Jordan recorded the last four outs.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader with Juniata. First pitch is set for 11 am.
