UMW Baseball (RV) Upsets #7 Salisbury, 7-2

The University of Mary Washington (RV) upset No. 7 Salisbury on Saturday, 7-2, in Fredericksburg, Va. behind seven dominant innings from Gavin Riley on the mound.

The Eagles started off strong in the first inning as Riley stranded the bases-loaded in the tip half, followed by a pair of hits in the bottom of the inning. The Sea Gulls, however, would be the first to breakthrough on the scoreboard in the second as an RBI single put Salisbury up, 1-0.

UMW, though, followed with a pair of runs in the third when George Rizzo led the inning off with a single. Oliver Martin then added a bunt single to put runners on first and second. A hitter later, Collin Clarkson tied the game with an RBI double that scored Rizzo, then Connor Hassan added a sac fly that scored Martin from third, 2-1.

The Eagles blanked Salisbury in the top of fourth before adding two more runs in the bottom half. Ryan Henson reached on a single before he was moved on a bunt. With an out, Cole Powers singled. After a strikeout, Powers stole second to put runners on the corners with two outs, which was then followed by a Martin two-RBI single to put UMW up, 4-1.

In the sixth, the Eagles struck for three more runs. Keegan Mahoney singled to lead-off the frame, which was followed by a Cole Powers single to the pitcher to put runners at first and second with no outs. George Rizzo dropped a bunt in between the third baseman and pitcher to lead the bases, but an errant throw to third on the play, allowed for two runs to score and for Rizzo to move to second base.

After Rizzo stole third, Hassan doubled down the left field line to score Rizzo from third and add to the lead, 7-1.

The Sea Gulls added a run in the seventh, 7-2, but Riley was able to escape the inning. He departed after seven innings, yielding six hits and two runs, while striking out six batters. He hit a batter in the first inning and from there on didn't yield any free bases. Matthew Boyd came in for the final two frames and shut the door on Salisbury -- striking out a pair in the process.

The Eagles are 3-0 at home against Salisbury in the last three years.

Mary Washington is back in action on Tuesday to take on No. 13 Bridgewater in Fredericksburg at 3:30 p.m.
