UMW Softball Opens 2017 Season With DH Split with Gettysburg on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its season opening doubleheader with visiting Gettysburg College on Saturday at the Battleground, winning the opener, 4-3, before falling in the nightcap, 7-2.

In game one, the Eagles jumped on top with one run in the first and another in the second. Freshman Danielle Newman led off reaching on an error, and stole second. She moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a fielder's choice.

In the second, freshman Jessica Huber smacked a one out double, and advanced to third on an error. Newman followed with an RBI single to plate Huber. 

Gettysburg reached the scoreboard in the fourth with a run, but the Eagles answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Hannah Hautz walked, and Malia Rogers singled. Amy Sykes provided an RBI single to center to score Hautz, and Rogers scored on a single from Britnee Haynes and an error.

Gettysburg scored a pair of runs in the seventh, and had runners at second and third before UMW induced the final out on a grounder to second base.

Newman, Huber, and Haynes each had two hits for UMW, with Sykes and Newman posting RBI. Sophomore Kara Deppe went the distance in gaining the win for the Eagles, scattering 12 hits in seven innings on two earned runs, with two walks and six strikeouts.

In the second game, the Eagles jumped ahead with two runs in the first, as Newman doubled, stole third base, and scored on a Rogers sacrifice fly to right that was misplayed. Rogers would score on a fielder's choice.

Gettysburg answered with four second inning runs, on three hits. The Bullets added one in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the fifth for a 7-2 victory.

The Eagles were led by Newman's double and single, while Rogers doubled and scored a run, and Hautz singled and walked.

Senior Erin Stinson took the loss, allowing four earned runs in 4.2 innings, walking three and striking out one.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they visit Lynchburg College for a noon doubleheader.
