UMW Softball Splits CAC Twinbill with Frostburg; Wins Game Two on Asselanis Walkoff in Eighth

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Battleground, falling in game one, 5-1, before taking the second game in eight innings, 6-5. UMW moves to 11-21 and 6-4 in CAC play.

The Bobcats scored first in game one, with a run in the third, before UMW tied the score with a run in the sixth. Hannah Hautz and Alexis Hall connected for back to back one out singles, and pinch hitter Sarah Manugo followed with an RBI double.

Frostburg countered with four runs in the seventh for the win. Olivia Tatara and Emily Briggs led the Eagles with two hits apiece, with Manugo adding the key double and RBI. Erin Stinson took the loss for UMW, allowing two earned runs on four hits in six-plus innings, with six walks and seven strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Frostburg started things with a two-run homer in the first, but the Eagles answered in the bottom of the frame with a solo homer from Tatara, an RBI single from Briggs, and a bases-loaded walk to Amy Sykes.

The lead held at 3-2 until the fifth inning, when Frostburg knotted the score with a run. In the sixth, Frostburg took a 5-3 lead, but UMW battled back to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh. Tatara walked and Asselanis singled, and Malia Rogers followed with a single to plate one run. Briggs followed with another RBI single, tying the score.

In the eighth, Caroline Callahan reached on an error, and moved to second on a sacrifice. Asselanis followed with a single to left that was misplayed, easily scoring Callahan with the winning run.

Briggs had two hits and two RBI, while Tatara had two hits and two runs scored. Asselanis had two hits and two runs scored, and Hautz added two hits as well.

Courtney Merson gained the win in relief, throwing 2.1 innings of one-hit scoreless relief with no walks and three strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action for senior day on Sunday against North Carolina Wesleyan College at 1:00 p.m.
