UMW Softball Sweeps Southern Virginia in CAC Twinbill; Deppe, Merson Combine on No Hitter in Finale

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader from Southern Virginia University on Friday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Battleground. The Eagles won game one, 7-1, and took the nightcap, 15-0, with freshman Kara Deppe and sophomore Courtney Merson combining on a no hitter.

In game one, the Eagles took the lead in the first, as Stefannie Asselanis doubled, Malia Rogers tripled, and Emily Briggs singled in taking a 2-0 lead. The Eagles added two runs in the third, as Rogers and Briggs led off with singles, and Briggs scored on an error and Hannah Hautz coming home on a sacrifice fly.

After the Knights scored in the fourth, UMW answered with two more in the bottom of the inning. Olivia Tatara led off with a single, and back to back doubles from Briggs and Hautz scored two.

The Eagles capped the scoring with a run in the sixth, as Emma Rakowski reached on an error and scored on a fielder's choice.

Briggs had a double and two singles, scoring twice and driving in two runs to lead UMW. Rogers singled and tripled.

Erin Stinson gained the win, allowing one unearned run on two hits in seven innings with one walk and seven strikeouts.

In the second game, Deppe walked one and struck out three in four innings, and Merson retired the side in order in the fifth, as UMW won game two, 15-0. The Eagles rapped out 15 hits.

The Eagles scored three in the first, with Briggs and Zoie Patrick providing RBI singles and Kaitlin Kean adding a sacrifice fly. UMW scored twice in the second, Rogers hit an RBI single, and Briggs followed with a sacrifice fly.

UMW erupted for eight runs in the third, with Kean hitting a sacrifice fly, Rogers drivinf in a run on a single before Briggs plated two more with a hit. Patrick, Kean, and Caroline Callahan each added RBI singles in the frame.

The Eagles added two in the fourth, with Britnee Haynes and Patrick providing RBI hits.

Deppe threw four innings of no-hit ball, with one walk and one runner reaching on an error. Merson came on for the fifth, and Callahan provided a fantastic catch in center field to preserve the no hitter.

Patrick was 4-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, with Tatara going 2-2 with three runs scored. Briggs was 2-2 with four RBI, and Rogers went 2-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday as they host Frostburg State University at 2:00 p.m.
