Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its opening weekend doubleheader with Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles are 1-1 on the season, and Gettysburg moves to 2-1.

In the first contest, Gettysburg jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. UMW committed an error that scored the first run, and Gettysburg drove in the next two off two hits to center field. The Bullets scored another run in the third to push their lead to 4-0.

The Eagles responded in the fourth, driving in two runs to cut the lead to 4-2. Steffanie Asselanis reached first after getting hit. Asselanis stole second, and Hannah Hautz drove her in on a triple to left field. Olivia Tatara drove in Hautz on the next at bat to cap the scoring for both teams.

Hautz and Tatara each had an RBI to lead the Eagles, and Ashton Ferneyhough took the loss for the Eagles.

In the second game, the Bullets jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Eagles responded in the second when Malia Rogers drove in Tatara for their first run of the game. Amy Sykes then drove in Emma Rakowski on a sac fly to narrow the deficit to 3-2. A Hautz home run in the third inning tied the score at 3-3. The Bullets answered the call and took back the lead at 4-3 in the fourth.

In the seventh, Emily Briggs singled to left field, driving in Zoie Patrick to even the score and send the game to extra innings. Gettysburg responded, scoring another in the eighth to take a 5-4 advantage. Amy Sykes then sent Tatara home to push the game to a ninth inning. The Bullets scored one more in the ninth, but Emily Briggs came through in the clutch again to secure a 7-6 win when she hit a shot off the left field wall to score Patrick and Asselanis.

UMW was led by three hits and three RBI from Briggs, and a homer from Hautz. Erin Stinson picked up the win for the Eagles.

The Eagles are back in action on Monday against Rosemont in Myrtle Beach, S.C. at 9:30 AM.
