UMW Softball Reaches 20 WIns; Splits Doubleheader at Frostburg

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Monday doubleheader at Frostburg State University, winning the opener, 6-5, and then dropping the nightcap, 4-3. The Eagles move to 20-12 on the season, and will next advance to the CAC Tournament.

In game one, the Eagles used a three-run seventh inning to win, 6-5. After allowing a run in the third, the Eagles tied the score in the fourth, as Hannah Hautz walked and scored on a pair of errors.

Frostburg took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, but UMW answered with two runs in the fifth to take the lead. Emily Briggs and Hautz collected singles, and advanced to second and third. Both scored on a Hannah Otterman single. Frostburg took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

The Eagles went ahead for good in the seventh, as Otterman hit a one-out single, and was followed by a single from Brittnee Haynes. After a fielder's choice, Malia Rogers doubled home on run, and Stefannie Asselanis followed with a two-run single for the game winning RBI.

Otterman, Haynes, and Rogers each had two hits each, with Otterman adding two RBI. Otterman gained the win for the Eagles, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings, with one walk and one strikeout.

In the second game, UMW scored in the first inning as Brittany Scites was hit by a pitch and scored on an error. The Bobcats erupted for four runs in the third inning, but UMW battled back, scoring in the fourth on an Asselanis sacrifice fly and in the sixth on an error.

Scites led UMW with three hits, while Alex Tenney added two. Erin Stinson took the loss for the Eagles, allowing four runs in 2.1 innings, with one walk and no strikeouts.

Mary Washington's doubleheader on Tuesday against Eastern Mennonite University has been cancelled. The Eagles will face York College in the opening game of the CAC Tournament on Thursday at 10 am at Christopher Newport University.
