Burns' Big Day Lifts UMW Baseball Past Penn State Altoona, 10-9, in 10 Innings on Tuesday

Box Score

Sophomore right fielder Brian Burns collected four hits, including the game-winning double in the bottom of the 10th inning, to lift the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 10-9 win over Penn State Altoona on Tuesday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 9-2 on the year.

The Eagles fell behind, 2-0, after the top of the first, but quickly tied the score in the bottom of the frame. Burns singled with one out, and stole second. Jono Haught followed with a walk, and Mitch Moynihan doubled down the left field line to plate Burns and send Haught to third. With two outs, James Sink walked, and was followed by James Keller, who walked with the bases loaded to push across Haught with the Eagles' second run.

The Lions scored in the third to take a 3-2 lead, but again UMW answered, as Sink bunted home Moynihan for the first run, and then James Keller doubled to plate Sink. UMW scored three in the sixth, as David Slupek hit a two-run homer, and Burns singled and scored on another Moynihan RBI double.

The Lions took a 9-8 lead with a five-run seventh, but Slupek doubled home Reed Farrier to knot the score in the bottom of the seventh. In the tenth, Slupek walked to lead off, and was replaced by pinch runner Brent Musante, who was sacrificed to second by Justin Kime. Burns doubled to left center to end the game.

Burns had three singles and a double, scoring twice and driving in one, while Sink had a double and two singles with two RBI. Moynihan doubled twice with two runs and two RBI, while Slupek doubled, homered, and drove in three runs.

Junior Tyler Daig earned the win in relief, throwing three innings of one-hit relief, walking one and striking out six.

The Eagles will host Southern Virginia University on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt.
