UMW Baseball Sweeps Sunday Twinbill From Penn State Altoona

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a Sunday doubleheader from Penn State Altoona, winning the opener 10-1 before coming from behind in the ninth to win the second game, 4-3. The Eagles improve to 3-1 on the season.

In the opener, the Eagles scored once in the second, as Junior Jono Haught doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a thomas Weaver sacrifice fly. UMW added three in the third, as Brendan Jones reached on an error and scored on another error, Brian Burns singled and scored on a Tyler Truslow RBI single, and Haught knocked home Truslow with an RBI single.

The Eagles added single runs in the fourth and fifth. Truslow scored James Sink in the fourth, and Sink knocked home Weaver with a single in the fifth. UMW scored four in the eighth, with J.R. Kirchner driving in two with a single, and Connor Finnerty scoring two more on a double.

Truslow went 3-4 with a run and two RBI, while Haught was 3-4 with two runs and an RBI. Finnerty had a single and double and two RBI.

Senior Ben Sisk earned the win for the Eagles, allowing just one hit in seven innings, with four walks and nine strikeouts. Tyler Daig pitched two perfect innings of relief.

In the nightcap, UMW fell behind, 2-0, in the first, before scoring in the sixth and eighth to tie the score. After the Lions went ahead in the eighth, UMW scored twice in the bottom of the ninth for the win. Sink walked to lead off the inning and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jones. Alex Bryant hit an RBI double to plate Sink, and pinch runner Derek Nease scored the winner on an error.

Haught was 1-2 with a pair of walks and an RBI, while Sink went 1-3 with a walk. Freshman Cole Jarvis pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, with three walks and five strikeouts. Nick McIntyre gained the win with three innings of two-hit relief.

The Eagles will host Shenandoah University on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
