Mancari, Somerville, Black Combine on No Hitter as UMW Baseball Sweeps Penn State-Altoons in Sunday Twinbill

Senior lefty Torey Mancari threw five no-hit innings and relievers Chris Somerville and Jake Black each added two hitless innings as the University of Mary Washington baseball team defeated Penn State-Altoona, 5-0, in the opener of their doubleheader on Sunday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles won game two, 8-1, to improve to 5-2 on the year.

In the opener, Mancari allowed just two hit batsmen and a walk in five innings and striking out a season-high 10 batters, and Somerville followed with a perfect sixth. Black pitched around two walks in the sveenth for the no-hitter.

 UMW scored twice in the first, as Chris King led off with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Brendan Jones. King scored on the front end of a double steal, and Jones scored on a double from Jono Haught.

In the second, UMW added two more, as Alex Bryant walked and moved to second on a King sacrifice bunt. Jones followed with a single to move Bryant to third, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Haught singled in Jones to push the Eagle lead to 4-0.

UMW added one run in the fifth as Chad Anglin was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After moving to second on a groundout, Anglin scored on an error to cap the scoring.

Haught led the Eagles at the plate with a double and two singles and two RBI, and Jones singled twice.

In game two, Mike Straub and two relievers held the Lions to three hits while the Eagles rapped out 11 hits in an 8-1 win.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, UMW scored twice as Steve Ruggiere and T.J. Cretney singled and advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Ruggiere scored on a passed ball, and Cretney scored on a wild pitch.

In the third, UMW added three runs, as James Sink singled and stole second base. Jones singled Sink to third, and Seth Jordan followed with a walk. Haught drove in two runs with a single to right, and Jordan scored on a Cretney double.

The Eagles scored three more in the sixth, as Alex Bryant provided an RBI single and came around to score with Jones on a two-run single from Jordan.

Straub allowed three hits and one earned run with two walks and six strikeouts, and freshmen David Phillips and Bernard Mayflower each pitched perfect innings of relief.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they visit Washington & Lee University at 3:00 p.m.
