UMW Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against St. John Fisher on Monday

The University of Mary Washington swept a doubleheader against St. John Fisher College on Monday afternoon in Tucson, AZ. The Eagles won the first game 9-5 and then defeated the Cardinals 10-2 in six innings.

UMW jumped out early in the first game as they scored two runs in the first inning. Hannah Bruns got on base with a walk and then Caroline Bird walked as well. Maggie Mrowka came up and hit a ground-rule double that brought home both baserunners to go up 2-0. The Cardinals struck back with one in the bottom of the first. In the second inning, Grace Drury got on base with a single. After that Rachel Remer doubled to bring her home, and then Bruns reached on an error to bring home Remer to give UMW a 4-1 lead.

The Eagles extended their lead to 7-2 after the end of the third inning. In the top of the third, Bird began the inning with a walk and then came around to score on another double from Mrowka. Logan Gibson reached on an error and Mrowka scored from that error. Drury brought home the seventh run of the game as she doubled and scored Gibson from second base. Up 7-4 at the end of the third, the Eagles added another run in the fourth as Danielle Newman led off with a ground-rule double. 

Megan Hibbs helped herself out as she singled up the middle to bring her home. After bring shutout in the next two innings, the Eagles added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Mrowka began the inning with a walk and then a single from Hibbs put runners on first and second. Gibson laid down a sacrfice bunt and then Drury singled to score Mrowka. Hibbs closed the Cardinals out to secure the win 9-5. Hibbs threw a complete game giving up five earned runs and striking out six batters. 

UMW kept the runs coming in the second game as they got out to a 5-0 at the end of the first inning. Remer began the game with a single and then Bruns drew a walk. Remer scored on a throwing error from the catcher. After a Newman walk, Bird singled to center field to score Newman. Mrowka scored Newman and reached base on an error from the Cardinals and then Bird scored on a passed ball. Mrowka ended up scoring the fifth run for the Eagles on a wild pitch. 

After both teams were held scoreless over the next two innings, the Eagles got on the board in the fourth with two more runs. Newman began the inning with a double and Bird walked to put runners on first and second. Gibson singled up the middle and brought home both Newman and Bird to record two RBI's. St. John Fisher added two runs in the top of the 6th to put the score at 7-2. 

The Eagles closed out the Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth as they brought home three runs. Drury and Gibson began the inning out by each drawing a walk. Gilbert laid down a sacrifice bunt to move them over but the Cardinals committed an error to bring home Drury. Remer picked up an RBI on a groundout and then Kelli Marie Anderson scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch after she was put in the game to pinch run for Gilbert. Hadlea Valera pitched all six innings giving up just two earned runs and striking out one batter.

The Eagles will stay out in Tucson and play St. John Fisher tomorrow at 11 a.m. before playing Emerson at 3:30 p.m.
