The University of Mary Washington softball team took down Eastern Mennonite, sweeping the Royals in a Thursday doubleheader in Harrisonburg, Va.
Game 1 - Eagles win, 13-7.
The Royals led off the first inning with a home run, but the Eagles countered with six in the second to take a 6-1 victory. It began with a
Linsey Spillman two-RBI double to give the Eagles an early 2-1 lead. Then
Kennedy Darling followed with an RBI single, then
Maeve Haun doubled home Darling to push the lead to 4-1.
Bayly Yerigan followed with another RBI double, then scored on a fielding error to push the lead to 6-1.
The Royals scored three in the second to come back, 6-4, but the Eagles pulled away a tad more. In the fourth, Yerigan added a run on a groundout. But the Royals tied the game on a three-run homer, 7-7. But that was as close as EMU would get.
In the fifth the Eagles took the lead back with an RBI single that scored another run on an error to take the lead, 9-7. Then Haun scored on a Yerigan bunt single that drew an errant throw, 10-7, and finally,
Emily Mousso cleared the bases on a three-run double that capped the scoring, 13-7.
Game 2 - Eagles win, 8-0.
In Game 2, UMW took an early 1-0 lead in the first on an
Erica Shoop single that drove in
Emily Angel. In the third, UMW added its second run on a
Shelby Presgrave sac fly that scored Yerigan.
In the fourth, Haun singled home both
Ari Biddle and Spillman to push the lead to 4-0. In the fifth, Biddle added another run on a sac fly, then
Mia Farhat scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-0. And finally, Angel and Shoop added runs on RBI singles that added to the lead, 8-0.
Stephanie Csontos pitched all five innings for UMW, yielding just two hits, walking one and striking out five before the game was called in the sixth due to darkness.
The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday against Shenandoah in Winchester, Va. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
