The University of Mary Washington softball team broke the single-season steals record on Tuesday as it took its 72nd base in a doubleheader with Stevenson in Stevenson, Md. The Eagles and Mustangs split the doubleheader.
Game 1- Eagles fall, 12-4.
In Game 1, Stevenson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but UMW stormed back to tie the game in the next frame as
Maeve Haun singled home both
Linsey Spillman and
Emily Mousso, 2-2.
But in the bottom half of the frame, the Mustangs struck for four runs to jump back in front, 6-2. The Eagles added another run on
Mia Farhat's RBI single in the top of the third, 6-3, but Stevenson added another run in the fourth, then three more in the fifth, 10-3.
Emily Angel added another run on a sac fly as she drove home
Kennedy Darling to cut the gap to 10-4, but Stevenson struck for two more in the sixth to come away with a 12-4 win.
Haun had a 4-for-4 line, driving in a pair of runs in the contest.

The Eagles and Mustangs combined to go scoreless for the first three innings before UMW put up a run in the fourth on
Mia Farhat's sac fly that scored the first run of the game. In the fifth, though, Stevenson struck for a pair of runs to take the lead, 2-1. But UMW stormed back with two runs in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead when Farhat doubled to center to score Shelby Pregrave to tie it, then took the lead on
Emily Mousso's single that led to an errant throw that scored Farhat from second.
In the seventh, UMW added three crucial insurance runs as Angel added her second sac fly of the day to up the lead to two, 4-2. Then
Erica Shoop followed with a sac fly of her own that scored Haun. Presgrave added another run on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder that allowed
Bayly Yerigan to score the eventual game-winning run as Stevenson added three runs in the bottom of the seventh, 6-5.
Sydney Jester recorded nearly every out as the right-hander went 6.2 innings, yielding a pair of runs on eight hits, while striking out four.
The Eagles are back in action on Thursday at Eastern Mennonite for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.
