Green's OT Score Leads UMW Men's Lax Past McDaniel, 17-16

Sophomore Logan Green scored the game winning goal in overtime to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 17-16 victory over McDaniel College on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season.

McDaniel opened the scoring in the early seconds, taking the opening faceoff and driving to score with 19 seconds elapsed. The Eagles answered with a pair of goals in the next 1:30, from Kevin Cruz and Kristophe Newman to gain the advantage, but McDaniel answered with 8:30 remaining to knot the score at two.

From there, Mary Washington scored five of the next six goals to grab a 7-3 lead. Cruz netted a pair of goals, at 6:51 and 5:11, and, after a Green Terror score, the Eagles added tallies from Nick Clingan and two more from Cruz to widen the advantage to 7-3. McDaniel scored in the final seconds to cut the margin to 7-4.

In the second, the Green Terror scored to open the frame, but Chase Kapuscienski stemmed the tide with 12:56 before intermission. McDaniel then scored five straight goals through the end of the second and into the third quarter to grab a 10-8 lead. The back and forth rallies continued as the Eagles answered with six straight goals to regain the lead at 14-10.

Cruz kicked off the run with a tally assisted by Kapuscienski at 11:20, and Logan Green followed less than a minute later. Newman and Clingan tallied goals midway throuh the third, and Cruz and Quintin Ricci tallied the Eagles' second and third goals in the span of a minute to up the lead to four.

McDaniel scored two of the final goals of the third, as the teams began trading goals. Jack-Henry Smith and Newman provided scores as UMW held a 16-13 lead with 10:48 remaining. After the visitors scored to cut the margin to 16-14, Eagle goalie Lucas Whittie came up big over the next three minutes with three saves to hold the lead. McDaniel scored with 30 seconds left to draw to within one, and scored the tying goal with .7 seconds left. Green scored the game winner with 3:29 left in the extra period on an assist from Kapuscienski.

The Eagles led in shots, 37-33, as well as faceoffs, 18-17. Cruz led the Eagles with seven goals and an assist, while Newman added three scores. Whittie made nine saves in goal to gain the victory. Ricci had 12 ground balls to lead the Eagles.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when the Eagles visit Ursinus College at 1:00 p.m.
