The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team started strong, but dropped a 21-7 decision to fourth-ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon in Coastal Lacross Conference action at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 6-5 overall, and 1-1 in CLC play.
The Eagles jumped on the scoreboard first with an unassisted score from
Rex Colliver at 11:36. After the Captains tied the score at 9:12, UMW went back ahead with a tally from
Tanner Boone on a
Joe Novak assist with 6:40 remaining. CNU tied the score at 2-2 on a man-up goal with 3:16 left.
In the second quarter, CNU broke ahead, scoring four goals in the opening 4:22.
Jackson Rhodes interrupted the run with a score assisted by
Quinn Weaver at 8:24, but the Captains scored four more to close the quarter and led, 10-3, at halftime.
Trailing 11-3 in the third, UMW bounced back with a pair of goals - from Boone on a
Dave Votapek assist at 12:11, and another from Votapek at 10:27 from Novak. CNU countered with three straight, before Weaver scored on a
Jay Hooker assist with 4:20 to go. The Captains answered with two of their own to lead, 16-6, after 45 minutes.
In the fourth UMW scored first on an AJ Lembo goal assisted by
Tucker Bradley at 13:20, but the Eagles would draw no closer, with five Captain scores to close the game.
CNU led in shots, 60-32, as well as ground balls, 41-25. UMW goalkeeper
Ryan D'Angelo made 16 saves in 53 minutes while allowing 19 scores.
The Eagles will visit seventh-ranked Salisbury University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in another CLC matchup.
