#4 UMW Women's Lacrosse Uses Big Second Half To Top Stevenson, 8-6, on Wednesday

The fourth-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team used a big second half to top Stevenson, 8-6, on Wednesday in Pikesville, MD. The Eagles found themselves down 3-1 at the half and scored seven goals in the second half to pull through. UMW improves to 8-1 on the season.

Stevenson got on the board first as they scored just 5:17 into the game. They added to their lead just 3 minutes on a free position shot and the Mustangs held a 2-0 lead with 21:31 to play. Both teams then went scoreless over the next 16 minutes. 

Stevenson extended their lead to 3-0 with 5:49 remaining in the first half. Hope Lockwood got UMW on the board as she scored on an assist by Julia Albert with 5:17 to play. Neither team could put a goal away from there and Stevenson held a 3-1 advantage at the half.

The Mustangs scored first again in the second half on a free position shot to go up 4-1 with 28:45 remaining. That is when the Eagles turned it on and started their comeback. Albert scored on a free position shot in a man-up opportunity just 19 seconds after the Mustangs goal. 

Albert added another on an assist from Lockwood with 24:05 left in the game. Mackenzie Maguire scored unassisted at the 22:46 mark to tie the game at four a piece, and then 34 seconds later Allison Davis gave the Eagles a 5-4 advantage. Stevenson tied the game up at 5-5 and then Lockwood gave the Eagles the lead again as she scored on an assist from Maguire with 17:53 remaining in the game.

The Mustangs then had a man-up opportunity and capitalized on it as they tied the score back up at six a piece. Maguire then scored unassisted with 5:18 left to give UMW a 7-6 lead. Albert gave the Eagles an insurance goal with 4:51 left as she scored on a free position shot. The Eagles held on from there to take the 8-6 win.

Paige Childers, Sarah Hampton, and Jennifer Bosserman all picked up three ground balls a piece. Albert had five draw controls, while Hanna Ashby made 12 saves in goal.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday as they will host Meredith at 3 p.m.
