The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-11 decision at 21st ranked Christopher Newport University in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals in Newport News on Wednesday afternoon.
The teams opened the game by exchanging goals into the second quarter. The Eagles opened with a score from
Anna Dube at 13:42. After CNU tied the score,
Abigail Fisher scored a player-up score at 12:23. The Captains again tied the score, but
Ashley Firesheets scored on an
Ava Windham assist at 9:46. Christopher Newport capped the first quarter scoring, with the encounter tied at 3-3 after 15 minutes.
Sadie Laughlin opened the second quarter by putting UMW back on top, but the Captains reeled off six straight goals to end the second and another to open the third, putting the Eagles in a 10-4 hole.
The Eagles then rallied, netting three straight in the third.
Kimber Konen scored twice, both on assists from Dube, and Dube added another to pull the Eagles to within 10-7 with 9:07 left in the third. The teams then traded the next four scores, with Firesheets scoring on a WIndham assist and Dube adding another with 2:10 left.Â
The Captains then opened the fourth by scoring four straight, before
Maura Schroeder capped the scoring with two seconds left.
CNU led in shots, 34-25, and won 20 of 30 draw controls. UMW goalkeeper
Cece Van Blenis had five ground balls and two caused turnovers in addition to making 13 saves. Junior
Madeline Stauder surpassed 100 career ground balls in the contest as well.
