The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-9 decision at 22nd ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles slip to 8-7 on the season.
In a tight contest throughout, the Eagles fell behind five minutes into the game, but tied the score at 1-1 on an
Ava Windham goal with 8:36 remaining. The Captains then netted a pair of goals, but UMW drew to within 3-2 as
Maura Schroeder scored unassisted with 2:49 left.
CNU opened the second with a goal, but UMW reeled off three straight to take a 5-4 lead.
Ashley Firesheets scored off a Windham assist at 12:26, and
Seanna Ruimerman followed at 10:23. Schroeder added her second of the day at 4:38 to give the Eagles the advantage. CNU tied the score, but Firesheets added another to put the Eagles on top at halftime, 6-5.
Mary Washington continued to score to open the third, as Ruimerman added another on a
Molly Ryan Gates assist at 10:03, and
Abigail Fisher upped the Eagle lead to 8-5 with 8:42 left. The Captains closed the third with a pair of goals, and outscored the Eagles, 4-1, in the fourth, with Schroeder scoring on a
Kimber Konen assist.
CNU led in shots, 32-26, and draw controls, 13-9. Eagle goalkeeper
Cece Van Blenis made 17 saves in the game.
The Eagles will visit Bridgewater College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
