#8/#6 UMW Women's Lax Tops Lynchburg, 17-7; Moore Wins 100th Game

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team jumped ahead early and cruised to a 17-7 victory over the University of Lynchburg on Saturday at a rainy Battleground. UMW improves to 3-0 on the season, as head coach Caitlin Moore wins her 100th career game.

The Eagles jumped ahead early with a balanced attack. Hope Lockwood opened the scoring at 27:02 on a Julia Albert assist, and Mackenzie Maguire followed less than a minute later on an Allison Davis assist. UMW added its third score at 23:58 on an extra player opportunity, as Albert scored unassisted.

Kennedy King pushed the margin to 4-0 at 16:41, and Maguire followed with her second tally of the day 41 seconds later, on a pass from Paige Haskins. After the Hornets reached the scoreboard to draw to within 5-1, Lockwood scored her second of the day on a Davis assist at 5:41 left, and her third on a Maguire pass with 3:59 on the clock. 

Lynchburg scored to draw to within 8-2, but UMW scored three times in the final 1:34. Morgan Shorts scored with 1:34, and was followed by Albert on a Maguire feed with 57 seconds left, and Davis capped the half with a score with two seconds remaining.

In the second half, the Eagles gained goals from Tess Siburn on a Rebecca Pullen assist with 2633 to go, and Pullen added another with 24:57 on the clock on a Kristen Kunaniec assist. The Hornets then scored a pair to draw to within 12-4, but Kate Sovero scored with 19:00 left on an Elizabeth Goermemann pass. Lynchburg rallied for two more scores, but Maguire stemmed the tide with an unassisted tally with 9:36 left.

Lynchburg answered with 8:22 to go to draw to within 14-7, but Davis responded with her fourth point of the day to push the lead back to eight with 4:47 remaining, and Pullen scored her second of the day on a man up chance with 2:31 left. Davis capped the scoring in the waning seconds.

Five different Eagles scored multiple goals, with Maguire scoring three goals and adding two assists and Lockwood and Davis adding three. Senior goalie Hanna Ashby made five saves against two goals in 30 minutes of action, while three goalies split time in the second half, with Shannon Bremer making one stop. 

UMW led in shots, 26-20, and won 17 of 24 draw controls. Davis led the Eagles with nine draw controls as well.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 4 p.m.
