#13 UMW Men's Soccer Tops Southern Va., 8-0, in CAC Quarterfinal

The 13th ranked University of Mary Washington men's soccer team erupted for seven first-half goals in an 8-0 victory over Southern Virginia University on Saturday at the Battleground in Capital Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal action. The top-seeded Eagles improve to 13-1-3, while the Knights see their season end at 1-19.

The Eagle offense clicked from the start, as junior Jacob Lovinger scored on an assist from freshman Noah Mazzatenta at 4:22, and Mazzatenta added another at 5:48 on a pass from senior Ryan Van Maanen. The Eagles pushed the lead to 3-0 at 9:19 on a Gary Foley penalty kick, and senior Justin Carey followed at 10:44 off a rebounded save. After a Southern Virginia own goal at 14:38, sophomore Joe Hatcher scored on an assist from classmate Jeremy Hokenson at 26:19. Freshman Justin Mittereder followed at 36:47 on an Idrissa Barrie assist, and the Eagles took a 7-0 lead to halftime.

In the second, sophomore Joshua Everard scored unassisted at 55:37, for the only tally of the half.

The Eagles held a 25-4 lead in shots, and also led, 8-1, in corner kicks. UMW sophomore goalie Ken Kurtz made one save in 45 minutes, and junior Tom Skeer added two in the second half for UMW. Jacob Solis and Kostner Olson each had two saves for Southern Virginia.

Mary Washington will advance to and host the CAC semifinal round on Wednesday. The Eagles will host either fifth seeded York or fourth seeded Frostburg State on Wednesday with a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
