The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team used
Gerrard Valoyi's 81st minute header off of
Nathan Macek's corner kick in the Eagles' 1-0 victory over No. 22 Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va. on Wednesday evening, 1-0.
The Eagles used the set piece to their advantage on Wednesday night as their chances were limited in the pouring rain -- the Captains out-shot UMW by nine, 16-7. But the Eagles had more shots-on-goal with five compared to CNU's four.
Christopher Newport out-shot UMW by three in a scoreless first half, 5-2, and keeper
Tristan Kickbush had to fend off 11 Captains shots in the second half. The Eagles took just five shots in the second half -- but it was their fourth shot that made the difference on the scoreboard.
After the ball went out of bounds off of a CNU defender, Macek was presented with a corner kick as his left boot launched the ball into the air that found the head of Valoyi in the 81st minute. Valoyi's header found the back of the net -- giving UMW the score it needed to take the lead.
The Captains had a four shots in the final four minutes as the first two were blocked, then keeper
Tristan Kickbush made a save to preserve the lead, before a shot wide was the final chance CNU had.
Kickbush recorded four saves in net, preserving UMW's seventh clean sheet of the season.
The Eagles are back in action next week from Nov. 6-9 for the Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament in Newport News, Va.
