Box Score The 16th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team overcame a 3-0 first half deficit to force overtime, but fell, 6-5, at top-ranked Salisbury University on Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium. The Eagles fall to 13-4 and 4-1 in the conference.
The Eagles started the game with momentum but that was quickly lost as Karen Cindea, Courtney Jantzen, and Summer Washburn put in three straight goals for the Seagulls.
With the score at 3-0 the Eagles had to answer before the game reached half. That answer came at the 26:17 mark from Kathleen Namey on an assist from Carlee Budd.
The Eagles capitalized on the momentum and put in another one at 28:42 thanks to another corner. This goal came from Budd on an assist from Namey.
But as the Eagles pulled closer, the Seagulls took advantage of an opportunity close to the net with only 1:16 left in the half. Jantzen picked up loose ball inside the circle and finished putting the score at 4-2 at half.
The Eagles fought hard out of the gate in the second half. Christine Downie tipped in a goal with the assist coming from Christine Loehr at 37:42. Ashlin Jones also tipped in a goal with the assist coming from Downie at 38:46.
However much like the first half, as soon as the Eagles got something going, the Seagulls had an answer. Samantha Johnson scored off an assist from Washburn at 41:57 to push the score to 5-4. The Eagles continued to fight by tying up the score at 52:06 thanks to an unassisted goal from Jenna Steele.
Regulation ended with the score tied at 5-5. Overtime was finished in 3:35, as Johnson connected with an assist from Washburn on an early corner.
The Eagles had 11 shots and 7 corners opposed to the Seagulls 17 shots and 13 corners.
In the goal for the Eagles, Megan McLaughin had 13 saves. The Seagulls played two goalies; Rachel Clewer had 5 saves and Tressie Windsor had 1.
The Eagles return to action in an away contest against CAC rival Christopher Newport University on Oct. 29 at 6:00 p.m.
