POSTGAME INTERVIEW W/ JAMIE TIERNEY, CAROLINE PORTER
Senior forward
Grayson Scott scored a pair of goals, after senior
Monique Lipton opened the scoring in the second minute, as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated Rhodes College, 3-0, in the Collegiate Field Hockey Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The Eagles, who gain their second straight CFHC title, improve to 14-6 on the season.
The Eagles started swiftly on the cold Wisconsin afternoon, as Lipton scored just 1:42 into the contest on an assist from senior
Lauren Boucher. Then, just 2:28 later, Scott provided UMW with a 2-0 cushion, on an assist from junior
Elizabeth Stribling.
The score stood at 2-0 through the first and second quarters, and the Eagles held to 2-0 lead to halftime. Scott caged another goal at 33:17, on an assist from tournament MVP
Mackenzie Proffitt, capping the scoring and giving the Eagles their second straight CFHC championship.
UMW led in shots, 12-7, and Rhodes led in penalty corners, 10-4. Eagle goalie
Tori Winans posted two saves in gaining the shutout.
In addition to Proffitt's naming as the tournament MVP, Scott,
Katie Royle, and Winans were named to the all-tournament team.
The Eagles will await a possible at-large NCAA Tournament bid, which begins next week. The CFHC is in year two of a two-year waiting period for an automatic bid, which will be enacted next season.
