UMW Softball Sweeps Wesley; Gains Tie for Second in CAC Standings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a Saturday Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wesley College, 5-3 and 6-5, and coupled with a Salisbury University sweep of Frostburg State University, gained a tie for second place in the final regular season league standings.

In the opener, Wesley jumped ahead with two runs in the first and another in the third, but the Eagles rallied with a five-run fifth inning and held on for the 5-3 win. The Eagles' big inning started with singles from Hannah Otterman, Steffanie Asselanis, and Hannah Otterman. After a fielder's choice, Bireet Chitty scored Asselanis with a single, and Brittany Scites cleared the bases with a three-run double. After Kerry Busby singled (with Scites getting thrown out at third on the play), Emily Nykorchuk doubled to score Busby.

In addition to her three-run double, Scites also singled, and Chitty, Asselanis, and Williams all also gained two hits in the contest.

Otterman gained the win, allowing three runs on five hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead, survived a three-run sixth by the Wolverines, and scored the game winner in the seventh inning for a 6-5 win.

UMW scored one in the first as Brandee Adams singled, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a Scites single. In the third, UMW loaded the bases, and Brianna D'Agata singled in one run, and Kerry Busby scored on a sacrifice fly to up the lead to 3-0.

After Wesley scored once in the third, UMW added two runs in the fifth, as D'Agata scored on a wild pitch, and Williams scored Alex Tenney with a single. Wesley scored once in the fifth and three times in the sixth to tie the score, but UMW found the game winner in the seventh as Williams walked and scored on an Adams RBI single.

Otterman pitched two innings of hitless relief for the win, walking two and striking out one. Senior Annie Blaine pitched five innings, allowing five runs on six hits with six walks and three strikeouts.

The Eagles will play Frostburg State University in the CAC Tournament on Friday in Salisbury, Md. Game time and seeding has yet to be determined.
