UMW Softball Splits Doubleheader With Gettysburg

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader with Gettysburg in Gettysburg, Pa. on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles won Game 1, 10-2, before falling in Game 2, 5-2.

Game 1 - Eagles win, 10-2.

In the first, UMW got on the board first when Emily Angel doubled home Maeve Haun with an out to start the Eagles' big game. In the second, Linsey Spillman drove in Allyson Jones with  a sac fly into right that gave UMW a 2-0 lead. In the same inning, Haun reached on a fielder's choice and drew a throwing error from the Bullets, which allowed Lindsey Poole to score to put the Eagles ahead, 3-0.

A pair of runs came across to score in the bottom half for Gettysburg as the Bullets pulled within one, 3-2. But the Eagles were relentless from there. In the fourth, Bayly Yerigan reached on a fielder's choice, which drove in Spillman to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead before Erica Shoop reached on a throwing error that scored both Yerigan and Haun, pushing the lead to 6-2.

And in the seventh, Spillman added another run on a ground out that plated Mia Farhat before Kennedy Darling reached on an error that scored Emily Mousso, 8-2. And finally, Yerigan singled a run home before Angel doubled to center to drive in another to push the big lead to 10-2.

Sydney Jester yielded just one in the first three innings of work before Stephanie Csontos also only allowed one run in the final four innings in the circle.

Game 2 - Eagles fall, 5-2.

In the first, UMW jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Erica Shoop's double to right center that scored Haun. But a run from Gettysburg in the bottom of the first, followed by three in the third and another in the fourth, gave the Bullets a 5-1 lead.

The Eagles countered in the sixth with a Mousso RBI single but couldn't muster any more runs.

Sofia Ponce pitched the last four innings, yielding just one unearned run in the process while striking out one hitter.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday against Randolph College at 2 p.m.
