UMW Men's Lax Uses Balanced Effort in Topping McDaniel, 11-9

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team used three goals apiece from Billy Kelly, Sean Dacey, and Luke Dick in topping McDaniel College, 11-9, on Saturday at the Battleground. John Bohlinger added two scores for the Eagles, who improve to 2-1 on the year.

The Eagles scored first, as Bohlinger scored jess than two minutes into the game. The Green Terror responded in a big way, scoring the game's next five goals, including a man-down goal to close the first quarter.

The Eagles then answered with a run of their own. Kelly scored his first goal of the day with 12:25 left in the second to close the gap to 5-2, and Bohlinger scored a minute later on a Paul Tunick assist to make the score 5-3.

Dacey scored a man-up goal with 3:24 to go until halftime, and Kelly tied the score with 11 seconds remaining to knot the score going to halftime at five. Dacey scored another man-up tally with 13:03 left in the third to return the lead to the hosts, but the Green Terror answered at 8:48.

Dick scored on a Tunick assist with 6:18 left in the quarter, but McDaniel tied the score heading to the fourth with 1:48 remaining. The Eagles scored four of the next five goals to seemingly put things away. Kelly scored unassisted at 13:12 left and dacey followed with another with 12:37 left on a Chip Pittard pass.

After the Terror cut the deficit to 9-8, Dick took over with goals at 5:54 and 3:57 to up the lead to 11-8, with Pittard and Kelly registering assists. McDaniel scored with 1:39 left to cut the deficit to 11-9, and played for a minute two men up, as the Eagles logged two penalties with 1:03 left.

Goalkeeper Zack Del Grosso and the Eagle man-down defense was equal to the challenge, as two shots soared high, and Del Grosso ran down the out-of-bounds ball to allow UMW to run the clock out.

McDaniel led in shots, 41-34, and in ground balls, 36-33. Del Grosso had 21 saves for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will return to action on March 2 when they visit Christopher Newport University at 1:00 p.m.
