Tunick's Game Winner Propels UMW Men's Lax Past McDaniel in Triple Overtime, 9-8

Box Score

Despite trailing for the majority of regulation, the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team forced three overtimes, and finally netted the game winner by Paul Tunick on a Luke Dick to take a 9-8 win at McDaniel College on Saturday in Westminster, Md. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season.

In a defensive battle, the majority of the first quarter was scoreless, before the Green Terror scored with 41 seconds remaining to take the lead at 1-0. In the second, McDaniel upped the lead to 5-0 before the Eagles chipped away, with Joey Marson getting the Eagles on the board with 3:28 left in the half. Marson scored again two minutes later to cut the deficit to 5-2, and that's where the score stood at halftime.

Marson scored his third goal of the game (and season) with 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter, and Chip Pittard scored on a John Bohlinger assist with 8:54 left in the third to cut the deficit to 5-4. Harry Snyder scored between two Green Terror goals in the third to leave the margin at 7-5 heading into the fourth.

Sophomore Billy Kelly cut the deficit to one at 7-6 with his first goal with 8:34 remaining. After McDaniel returned the lead to two at 8-6 with 4:31 left, the Eagles used another Kelly goal assisted from Bohlinger to cut the deficit to 8-7, and with just 17 seconds remaining in regulation, Bohlinger netted the tying goal.

Both teams went scoreless through the first overtime, with the hosts garnering two shots and the Eagles one. In the second extra frame, a 30-second holding penalty didn't deter the Eagles, who killed the extra-man opportunity without a shot. Then, with 3:06 left in the third extra frame, Dick found Tunick for the game winner.

McDaniel held a 30-29 edge in shots, with both teams' keepers making seven saves. The Eagles held a 32-31 advantage in ground balls, and overcame five penalties for the win.

The Eagles will be back in action next Saturday when they host Christopher Newport University at 1:00 p.m.
