FREDERICK, Md.--The University of Mary Washington snapped its three-game losing streak on Wednesday in an 18-10 Capital Athletic Conference decision at Hood College on a steamy afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.

UMW's Brian Deal (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shady Side Academy) wasted no time getting the Eagles on the board, scoring two unassisted goals in the first minute of the game. After a Hood timeout, Scott Thompson ripped his 12th goal of the season off a feed from Trey Freeman.

The Eagles tacked on three more unanswered scores, by Spencer Lahiff (Fairfax, Va., Woodson), Brian Meaney (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., Cold Spring Harbor), and Johnny Hink (Fairfax, Va., Woodson), and led, 6-3, after 15 minutes. UMW outscored the Blazers 5-1 in the second quarter to take an 11-4 lead at halftime. Kohl Meyer (Shawnee, N.J., Shawnee) scored twice in the run for the Eagles.

The Eagles had the upperhand in the third quarter as well, outscoring the Blazers, 4-1, including scores from Meaney, Travis Short (Ridgefield, Conn., Ridgefield), Meyer, and James Fitzella (Vienna, Va., Madison). 

After Hink and Danny Scheim (Commack, N.Y., Hauppauge) scored back-to-back goals 20 seconds apart to start the fourth quarter, Hood reeled off five straight scores to draw to within 17-10. But the Eagles' Short tacked on his second goal of the season for the final margin with just under five minutes to play.

Brian Meaney finished with a team-high six points on four goals and two assists for the victors. The Eagles outshot Hood, 45-23, and had 58 ground balls to 45 for the hosts. The Eagles were 2-2 on extra man opportunities and made 19 of 31 faceoffs.

Mary Washington will visit Marymount University on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. in a game played at Washington-Lee High School.
