Balanced Effort Leads #20 UMW Women's Lax Past #19 Stevenson, 14-6

A balanced scoring effort and a solid defensive performance led the 20th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 14-6 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Stevenson University on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in CAC play.

Stevenson opened the scoring in the opening minutes, but the Eagles answered quickly and often, netting the next five goals of the game to lead, 5-1, with 13:44 left in the first half. Senior Brittany Butler (Easton, Conn., Joel Barlow) and sophomore Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Lutheran)each scored twice in the run, with sophomore Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va., Robinson) adding one tally. 

After a Mustang tally cut the lead to 5-2, Lauren Callison (Stevensville, Md., Kent Island) and Katie Wallis (Cypress, Texas, Cy-Creek) scored to up the lead to 7-2. Kennedy capped the first half scoring on a Kimmelman assist to give UMW an 8-3 advantage at intermission.

The Eagles scored six of the first seven second half goals, allowing just one score in the first 27 minutes of the frame to seal the 14-6 win. Butler, Kennedy, and Wallis each scored twice in the second for UMW.

Mary Washington outshot Stevenson, 30-29, and had 24 ground balls to 21 for the Mustangs. The Eagles won 14 of 22 draw controls and were successful on 6-9 free position attempts, while Stevenson was just 1-9. Freshman Leigh Ann Redefer (Lewes, Del., Cape Henlopen) made 15 saves for the Eagles. Jenny Atmar (Houston, Texas, Bellaire) scored three draw controls, three caused turnovers, and three ground balls, while Ellen Bikowski (Fairfax, Va., Bishop O'Connell) forced six turnovers for the Eagles.

Kennedy led UMW with five goals and one assist, Butler scored four goals, Wallis scored three times, and Kimmelman added a goal and three assists for UMW.

Mary Washington will visit Catholic University on April 1 at 4:00 p.m.
