On Saturday, April 4th, 2026, the University of Mary Washington Women's Rugby team hosted the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference (MARC) 7s Championship. Eight of the top seeded teams in the conference competed in the tournament, including UMW, the University of Delaware, William & Mary, Temple University, Towson University, Kutztown University, American University, and the University of Maryland.
The Eagles faced the University of Delaware in the first match. In the second minute, junior
Ava Ward scored on the outside off a scrum in the first try of the match for UMW. Her first try was not converted. In the 7th minute, Delaware took advantage of a knock on, got the ball outside, and scored 95 meters out. Delaware converted their own try, leaving the halftime score at 7 Delaware – 5 Mary Wash. After the half, Delaware responded with another try. They did not convert their second try. UMW's
Ava Ward scored again three minutes later up the middle, converting her own try. Delaware touched down a third time off a pick and crash from a ruck but did not convert this try. In the final minute, Mary Wash's sophomore
Greta Giese scored to tie up the match from a series of phases by the Eagles. UMW's final try was not converted. Since this was a pool play match, the final score ended in a draw, 17 UMW – 17 Delaware.
UMW competed against Temple University in the second match of pool play with four tries made by the following players: sophomore
Lena Hansen (2), senior captain
Nyah Speicher (1), and Giese (1). Ward converted two of the four tries. Temple scored once in each half but did not convert either of their tries. The final scored ended in a victory for the Eagles, 24 UMW – 10 Temple.
In the third match of pool play, Mary Washington faced the University of Maryland. The Eagles attacked strongly in the first half and had possession most of the time, but Maryland was strong to defend. UMW's Giese scored in the 6th minute after a great offload from sophomore
Izzy Schefermann 35 meters out. This try was not converted. In the final minute of the first half, smart passing and support by Maryland resulted in a try from them. Maryland did not convert their try, leaving the halftime score at 5 UMW – 5 Maryland. In the second half, despite turnovers in possession from both sides, Maryland was able to score twice more and convert once, ending the match with the Terps victorious, 5 UMW – 17 UMD.
Due to head-to-head standings and point differentials amongst the teams in the tournament, UMW played for the fifth-place match against William & Mary. Tribe had steady possession for the first three minutes of the match. UMW gained possession, however; a forward pass from UMW resulted in a scrum to William & Mary, where they scored three phases afterwards on the outside. They converted their try two minutes before halftime. Both sides did not touch down in the final minutes of the first half, resulting in a halftime score of 0 UMW – 7 William & Mary. Possession continued to bounce back and forth between the Eagles and Tribe in the second half, but UMW took advantages of opportunities on attack with three tries by the following players: senior captain
Nyah Speicher (1), freshman
Sofia Still (1), and sophomore
Haley Smith (1). Ward converted Smith's try. The final score ended in another win for UMW, UMW 17 – William & Mary 7.
UMW Women's Rugby walked away with the fifth-place win of the conference championship, ending with a 2-win, 1 draw, 1 loss record for the day.
