The University of Mary Washington Women's Rugby team was offered an at-large bid to the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Collegiate Rugby 7s National Championships (CRCs) Saturday, April 25th – Sunday, April 26th at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Maryland. UMW Women's Rugby will be one of sixteen teams competing for the Division II Women's 7s National Championship.
Only six at-large bids were available within the Division II Women's bracket. Not only will UMW Women's Rugby be competing, but 144 men's and women's teams across all divisions will be as well with three hundred matches occurring.
UMW Women's Rugby had a 19-win, 1 draw, and 3 loss record throughout their 2026 7s season. The team's first match at CRCs will be against Fairfield University Saturday, April 25th at 11:40 AM on Field 10 of the Maryland Soccerplex. More information about the schedule can be found here: https://www.collegiaterugbychampionship.com/2026-schedule/womens-division-ii
The program last went to the round of 16 for the USA Rugby Women's 15s Division II National Playoffs in 2017, where they lost in the first round against Kansas State University. Current assistant coach, Emily Rees, was a part of that team. UMW Women's Rugby claimed the Women's 15s Division II National Championship against Cal State Northridge in 2014.
Now, the team is excited to compete for a 7s national title. 7s is a 7 on 7 variation of rugby, instead of 15 per side. The 7s variation also made its debut in the 2016 Olympics. It's fast-paced with more opportunities for breakaways and quick plays. Each half lasts only seven minutes, totaling a fourteen-minute game. The matches at CRCs will be streamed on https://tv.ncr.rugby/ with a $19.99 weekend pass
