UMW Women’s Rugby Wins 4 Straight Shutout Matches but Falls Short in the Final at Home 7s Series

On Saturday, February 21st, 2026, UMW Women's Rugby hosted VCU, Longwood, CNU, William & Mary, Roanoke College, and St. Mary's College of Maryland at their home 7s Series.

In the first match of pool play, the Eagles won a shutout against VCU, securing a 38-0 victory. Three tries were scored in the first half by the following players; sophomore Jo Lent (1), sophomore Lexi Krug (1), and senior Celine Jenkins (1). Margrethe Brooks made her UMW Women's Rugby debut and scored with her first touch of the ball in the first minute of the second half. Sophomore Greta Giese and freshman Audrey Williams each scored a try afterwards. Junior Ava Ward converted four of the six tries.

For the second match of pool play, UMW claimed the victory against Longwood, 24-0. Tries were scored by Lent (1), Ward (2), and Krug (1). Ward converted two of the four tries.

The Eagles won the third match of pool play, 38-0, against a combined B-side composed of players from Christopher Newport University and William & Mary. Six tries were scored by the following players; Brooks (2), Giese (2), sophomore Lena Hansen (1), and Williams (1). Ward converted four of the six tries.

UMW faced William & Mary's A-side in the semifinal match, similar to the weekend before. UMW's defense remained strong for a fourth shutout match with tries scored by Brooks (1), Ward (1); converting her own try, and Krug (1). The final score was UMW 17 – William & Mary 0.

Just like the previous weekend in the final match of the series, UMW went head-to-head against CNU. Continued possession by the Eagles in the first four minutes led UMW's Ava Ward to score. CNU scored and converted a try in the final minute of the first half. CNU remained strong in the second half, scoring twice more. The Captains took the series victory, winning CNU 17 – UMW 5.

It started as a strong day at home for UMW Women's Rugby with four straight shutout matches. Despite not claiming this 7s series victory, the team reached another final. Grit and perseverance were demonstrated by all UMW Women's Rugby players.
