On Saturday, March 28th, 2026, UMW Women's Rugby traveled to Longwood University to compete in the Lancers' 7s series. Six teams besides Mary Wash participated in this tournament, including the College of William & Mary, Christopher Newport University, Longwood University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and St. Mary's College of Maryland. Since there were six teams competing, the tournament was played in a round robin format.
For the first match, UMW faced VCU. VCU was quick to score a try off the kickoff, but UMW came back strong with four tries, scored by sophomore
Margrethe Brooks (converted by junior
Ava Ward), sophomore
Lena Hansen, sophomore
Ava Barnes, and sophomore
Jo Lent. Mary Wash came out with the victory, 22 - VCU 5.
The Eagles won a second time against William & Mary, 19 - 7. William & Mary scored first at the fourth minute, converting their try. At the end of the first half, Ward scored and converted her own try. In the second half, Ward scored and converted her own try again. Lent scored a minute later.
UMW competed against CNU in their third match. The Eagles beat the Captains on February 14th, 2026, 24 - 10, while CNU came back for a win against UMW on February 21st, 2026, 5-17. UMW knew it would be a touch match against the Captains this time around. The Eagles responded in the fourth minute with a try by sophomore
Haley Smith. CNU scored at the end of the first half, leaving the score 5 - 5 at halftime. In the second half, freshman
Ariel Barrera scored her first try for the Eagles, converted by Ward. CNU scored a second time as well two minutes later. The Captains did not convert either of their tries, leaving UMW with the win, 12 - CNU 10.
The fourth match was a contest between Mary Wash and Longwood. Ward scored two tries in the first half, converting one of her tries. Shortly into the second half, sophomore Smith scored. Longwood responded with a try but could not stop the Eagles from touching down again with a fourth try of the match by freshman
Charlotte White. This was White's first try for UMW Women's Rugby. The final score resulted in a win for UMW, 24 - Longwood 7.
Unfortunately, shortly into the fifth match against St. Mary's College of Maryland, a St. Mary's player got injured. Their team had to forfeit due to limited viable numbers. This resulted in an automatic win for UMW, 28 - 0.
UMW Women's Rugby is seeded first in the South division and #2 overall behind Towson University in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference. The team will host the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference Women's Division II 7s Championship on Saturday, April 4th, 2026 at the Battleground. Teams that qualified for the tournament besides Mary Wash include Towson University, the University of Delaware, William & Mary, Temple University, American University, Kutztown University, and the University of Maryland.
UMW Women's Rugby will face the University of Delaware at 9:20 AM, Temple University at 11:00 AM, and the University of Maryland at 12:40 in pool play. Come out to the rugby pitch this Saturday to support the Eagles as they chase a conference championship this year!
