Nyah Speicher and junior men's tennis All-American
Trevor Rein have been named as the 2025-26 UMW Athletics Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
Speicher graduated in May as a double major in Psychological science and Data science, carrying a 3.91 cumulative grade-point average, including a 3.97 and 3.93 GPA in her majors. She served as team captain for the past two and a half years, spanning five seasons. She ran warm ups, assisted in game day preparation, and served as a liaison between coaches and student athletes.
She played flyhalf in 15s, one of the most decision-making positions in rugby, to lead the back line. Nyah carried her skill set into the 7s game as well, providing a stable connection to distribute the ball and read space. This past year alone, she scored 13 tries. She captained the team to their first National 7s rugby appearance at the Collegiate Rugby Championships (CRCs) this past April, scoring a try in her last game with the team at CRCs as well. She was recognized as a National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Scholastic All-American three times in 2024, 2025, and 2026, demonstrating her commitment to academics and the sport.
Rein holds a 3.82 cumulative GPA, including a 3.91 in his Economics major. He is also a political ethics minor. On the court, he gained ITA doubles All-America status, advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA doubles championship with teammate Asher WIllenborg. The duo finished the year ranked seventh nationally, leading the team to the third round of the NCAA team tournament, and a final national ranking of 14
th.
A first team all-conference selection in both singles and doubles, he gained 11 singles victories as well as 19 in doubles this year. Rein has been admitted to George Washington Medical School through a program with UMW. He is a member of the honors program, has secured Deans list every semester and year, is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma and Pi Gamma Mu honor societies.
