On Saturday Mar 15, Mary Washington hosted a four-team double elimination 7s tournament. The tournament is part of the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference (MARC) 7s series, with points being awarded towards the seeding into the MARC Championship on April 12. Entered into the tournament were two teams from Mary Washington (A & B), VCU, and a combination Christopher Newport University/Georgetown University team.
Unfortunately, Mary Washington B was eliminated with a 33-12 defeat to VCU and a 43-0 loss to the combined CNU/GU team.
The outcome for Mary Washington A side was more favorable as they won their first two matches, 31-10 against CNU/GU and then 29-5 over VCU. The two victories put Mary Washington A int the finals. With CNU/GU's 33-5 victory over VCU, CNU/GU also advanced to the finals.
Mary Washington A played their best match of the round robin tournament, securing a 48-5 victory over CNU/GU, and therefore winning the tournament. Mary Washington has now won two tournaments this season, with a second-place finish in a third.
Next up for UMW Women's Rugby is another MARC 7s series event on March 29. The tournament will also be hosted at Mary Washington. The contest is likely to host 6 teams, with possible entries including William & Mary, Georgetown , Christopher Newport, VCU, and George Mason.
