University of Mary Washington's basketball guard
McKenna Huff was drafted by New York into the Women's Professional Baseball League (WPBL) late last week in the third round (59th overall) of the league's inaugural draft.
Huff, who plays guard on the UMW women's basketball team, played baseball, softball and basketball growing up in Northern Virginia. At the Little League level, Huff was a national all-star and winner of the league's 2018 home run derby. She became the first female to make Robinson High School's baseball team in Fairfax, Va. Additionally, she played travel baseball, last playing for the
Metro Senators, according to Perfect Game.
Over the summer, Huff appeared in the All-American Women's Baseball Classic (AAWBC) powered by USA Baseball for the South Bend Blue Sox,
driving in a pair of runs with a double off of the Rockford Peaches and had
two hits on the final day of the WPBL tryouts in at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. earlier this month.
Matt Warren of the WPBL wrote the following when Huff was drafted:
"Huff adds another up-the-middle defender to New York's roster. A shortstop with range and strong fundamentals, she provides both present-day depth and long-term upside."
Huff and the Eagles open their home slate on Tuesday evening against Randolph in the Anderson Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
