The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell to Christopher Newport (RV), 60-48, in Fredericksburg, Va. on Saturday afternoon.
Juliona Mabie (12 points),
Rileigh Weaver (11) and
Jenna Steadman (11) led UMW in scoring.
The Eagles started strong once again as they jumped out to a 15-7 lead at the 4:46 mark after a
Jenna Steadman 3-pointer. The Captains slowly closed in on the Eagles lead as they took a 17-15 lead by the end of the first quarter. But in the second quarter, UMW jumped right back in. The Eagles held CNU to just 10 points in the period, forcing the Captains to just a 4-for-13 mark from the floor (30%) and just a 1-of-7 mark from deep (14%). UMW took a lead into halftime, 28-27, as
Juliona Mabie was 5-for-5 from the floor with 10 points.
But in the third quarter, CNU began to pull away as it scored 18 points compared to UMW's 10. In the fourth, though, UMW used a 6-2 run to come within three points of CNU with 8:27 left to play but that was close as the Eagles would get as CNU began to pull away.
For the day, UMW was a solid 20-for-45 from the floor (44.4%), knocking down a trio of 3-pointer's in the process, meanwhile, CNU was just 21-for-65 from the floor (32.3%) and shot just 4-for-19 from deep (21.1%). On defense, UMW forced 16 turnovers and came away with six steals.
The Eagles are back in action next week for the Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament in Salisbury, MD.
