The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team took down Santa Cruz in dominant fashion on Thursday afternoon in the Coast-to-Coast Conference quarterfinal matchup, 71-49, in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles are set to take on Christopher Newport (RV) in Friday's semifinal matchup.
The Eagles were in control of Thursday's game from the get-go as they took a commanding 13-4 lead by the time the 6:10 mark in the first period came around. They took the early lead via an
Rileigh Weaver and-one, then
Juliona Mabie nailed a layup, which was followed with an
Emma Terry layup to give UMW a 7-2 lead. Then Mabie nailed three consecutive layups to give UMW a 13-4 advantage.
The Eagles would ride that same momentum to close out the first quarter with a 19-8 lead after they shot 7-of-14 from the field in the period, while holding the Banana Slugs to just three baskets in the quarter. In the second, the Banana Slugs and Eagles traded baskets for most of the period as UMW went into the break with a 35-25 lead. In the third, UMW once again had a hard time missing as it shot 9-of-17 (52.9%) before running away with the victory in the final period as Santa Cruz made just three of its 14 baskets.
Weaver led the way in scoring with 18 points witha 6-for-12 effort from the floor, nailing all six free throws in the process. Too, the C2C Second Teamer grabbed eight boards and recorded a steal in the victory. Mabie netted 10 points, two rebounds, a block, and a steal, while
Jenna Steadman had 10 points on a 4-for-8 evening from the floor.
As a team, UMW shot 25-for-54 from the floor (46.3%), while nailing a trio of 3-pointer's in the process. On defense, the Eagles held Santa Cruz to just a 19-of-65 mark from the floor (29.2%) and a 6-of-30 mark from deep. UMW also came away with the lead in rebounds as it held a 46-39 advantage, while forcing 14 Banana Slug turnovers.
The Eagles are back in action on Friday in Salisbury, Md. to take on the No. 1-seeded CNU Captains in the C2C semifinals. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
