The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell to Christopher Newport (RV) in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Semifinals, 64-54, in Salisbury, Md. on Friday afternoon.
The Eagles got out to another fast start as they took a first quarter lead, 13-12, by the time the horn sounded. After falling behind 11-7, the Eagles A 6-1 run propelled UMW to the lead thanks to
Juliona Mabie's four free throws and
Julianna Fisher's layup to close the first quarter. UMW nailed 4 of its first 10 shots, including a 3-pointer, while holding CNU to just a 3-for-9 line from the floor.
The Eagles stumbled a bit in the second quarter as the Captains took a 29-21 lead into the half. But in the third, the Eagles began to storm back as they nailed seven of their 15 shots in the period that included a pair of treys -- outscoring CNU by two, 17-15. Entering the fourth, UMW brought it closer as it only trailed 44-38, but a hot shooting performance from CNU was the nail in the coffin for the Eagles, who shot it about as well as the Captains did in the quarter.
Overall, UMW shot 21-of-58 from the floor (36.2%), which included four treys, meanwhile, the defense held CNU to just a 19-of-52 mark from the floor (36.5%) and limited the deep ball (5-of-14). The Eagles held the advantage in rebounds, 43-32, and forced 15 turnovers and came away with six steals. Mabie led the way with 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting, while
McKenna Huff added 12 and
Jenna Steadman had 11.
