UMW Volleyball Downs Frostburg St., 3-0, on Wednesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington volleuyball team downed Frostburg State University, 3-0, on Wednesday evening in the Anderson Center. The Eagles improve to 8-4 overall, and 1-0 in the CAC.

UMW jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first set on a couple of kills from Leslie Walters and ball handling errors on the Bobcats. The Eagles pushed their lead to 12-5 on a kill from Alana Harris. From there, the Eagles used a 7-3 run on two kills from Keri Gearhart and a kill from Savannah Powers to put UMW up 19-8. Sophomore Tenley Hares capped the first set scoring on a kill from Kendal Hall to take the first set 25-15.

In the second set, the Bobcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. After Peyton Dunow put an end to that run, the Eagles went on a 7-1 run of their own to take an 8-5 advantage. With UMW leading 14-10, they pulled away in the second set as they scored nine straight points. Powers, Gearhart, Dunow, and Aidan Finnegan all secured kills during the 9-0 run. After a couple points for Frostburg State, Powers tipped one over the net to secure the second set for the Eagles, 25-12.

The Eagles had another fast start in the third set as they jumped out to a 10-1 lead. The Bobcats made a run to bring it to within four, 12-8. The Eagles extended their lead to 17-8 after an attack error. Again the Bobcats made a run, and tied it up after the Eagles were called for being out of position. After that call, UMW seized control to win the final set 25-21.

Walters led UMW with 10 kills on 16 attempts, hitting .562. Gearhart finished with eight kills and Powers with seven. Wren Berry dished out 22 assists, while Kendal Hall had 14. Ryan Cho picked up 13 digs for the Eagles. UMW hit .292 and had a total of 14 blocks on the night.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday as they will travel to Pittsburgh, PA., to play in the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Invitational. UMW will play Kean at 6 p.m. and Muskingum at 8 p.m.
