Balanced Scoring Attack Leads #11 UMW Women's Lacrosse Past Southern Virginia, 19-2, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse saw 12 different people score a goal to help defeat Southern Virginia University, 19-2, on Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles remain perfect on the year at 7-0. 

Savannah Boyd started the scoring for the Eagles just 2:54 into the game, and then Hope Lockwood scored on an assist from Holly Hudson just 27 seconds later to go up 2-0. Mackenzie Maguire scored her first goal of the game on an assist from Katherine Lambert with 24:25 remaining in the first half.

Maguire then dished out an assist to Allison Davis with 24 minutes to play to put the Eagles up 4-0. Over the next 3:15 the Eagles scored four goals to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Those goals were scored by Julia Albert, Hudson, Maguire, and Tess Siburn. The Knights got on the board with 19:31 to play.

Rachel Marshner added a goal for the Eagles on an assist from Madison Hurlburt. Hurlburt then got in on the scoring action as she put one away to put UMW up 10-1 with 13:24 to play. Chloe Wade scored with 11:36 to play and then Hurlburt scored on a free position shot to extend the Eagles lead to 12-1. Kennedy King scored the last goal of the half for UMW on a free position shot to put UMW up 13-1 at halftime.

Out of halftime, Albert added another goal on a Maguire assist with 28:25 to play in the game. Maguire scored her third goal of the game at the 26:40 mark, and Albert netted her third goal as well with 25:23 left. Southern Virginia scored another goal with 20:34 to play and that put the score at 16-2.

King scored another goal with 18:14 to play in the game. Kristen Kunaniec got in the scoring column on an assist from Kate Sovero with 16:19 left and that put the Eagles up 18-2. Wade capped the scoring for the game as she scored with 6:53 remaining on an assist from Hurlburt.

Kunaniec led the Eagles with three ground balls and Albert recorded three draw controls. Shannon Bremer made four saves for UMW.

UMW outshot SVU 23-10, and totaled 16 ground balls. The Eagles won 15 draw controls and converted 7-8 clears.

UMW will be back in action on Thursday as they host #1 Gettysburg College at 4 p.m.
