Abigail Fisher scored four goals, and junior goalkeeper
Cece Van Blenis made 14 saves, including several in a tight fourth quarter, to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to an 11-9 win over Roanoke College on Wednesday night at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 5-4 on the season.
Roanoke quickly jumped ahead after the opening draw, scoring twice in the first 2:17 of play. Fisher scored to put UMW on the scoreboard with 11:02 remaining in the first, but Roanoke answered less than a minute later to take a 3-1 lead. Fisher pulled UMW back to within 3-2 at 7:32 on an
Ella Santilli pass. Roanoke again scored, but senior
Kimber Konen closed the quarter with a tally with 2:10 left on a Dube assist.Â
The second quarter belonged to the Eagles, as they scored four straight to start the frame. Santilli scored on an
Ashley Firesheets pass with 12:51 to go, and Fisher scored a pair, one assisted by
Sadie Laughlin, before Santilli capped the streak at 4:09 from Dube.
Roanoke scored to end the second, and twice more to start the third to tie the score at 7-7. Sophomore
Ava Windham put UMW back on top with five minutes left on a Laughlin feed. After Roanoke tied the score with 4:12 remaining, the Eagles closed the quarter with a goal from Firesheets with 1:58 left to regain the lead at 9-8.
The fourth was a defensive battle, with neither team scoring for the first near 10 minutes. The Eagles gained big insurance goals from Santilli with 5:38 to go on a Laughlin assist, and form Windham with 4:34 to go. Roanoke scored once to pull to within 11-9, but were turned away twice late from Van Blenis.
Roanoke led in shots, 30-25, as well as ground balls, 26-15. Van Blenis made 14 saves in gaining her fifth win of the year.
The Eagles will be back oin action on Saturday at 3:00 pm against Messiah University.
